A Life Lesson that Brings Music to Your Ears: SHINE!

Ten years ago I met this amazing bass guitarist through one of my best childhood friends who had moved to West Chester. The guitarist's name was Tim Celfo (CLICK to listen to Sunrise Morning). When our son expressed interest in playing the piano last summer, she quickly reminded me that Tim was our man. Tim was the whole package—patient, kind, talented, young, played in a “cool” band, and a music teacher. Every six year old’s dream in a piano teacher, right? Wrong! We discovered that Dan and I were blessed with an “improv” boy—a boy who wanted to play his own tune and bring the song out of his head and onto his own keyboard in his own time.

After only eight weekly lessons, Tim being a wise and “in-tune” old-soul, he brought this to our attention. We decided not to push it and said we’ll take a break and see what comes of it. A tough decision for us to make, but it felt right. Two weeks ago, I watched our six year old sitting on the floor playing around on his two foot keyboard we got him when he was three. I heard him playing eight notes over and over again. Then he began to expand it and repeating it from the beginning. It sounded awesome!

I told him to keep playing. Words came rushing through my head. I grabbed the flip camera and rushed to my bed room. As I pointed it to the floor, I pressed record. I took his riff and started improving the lyrics and a catchy tune began to develop into “Shine!” a song that gives people the strength to overcome obstacles, take a fear not approach, and SHINE!

After recording the song, I sat down at the kitchen table and transferred the recorded lyrics onto a piece of flip chart paper. I quickly moved over to the piano bench and began to write down each note—one by one. I remembered thinking, “Thank God my parents gave me six months of piano lessons and for my grandmother’s ability to play by ear.” At that point, I was also thankful that my parents allowed me to quit after six months of lessons. I was able to stop when I still enjoyed it. I wanted to explore something different—art! It was those two gifts that gave me just enough for me to put the song to paper. Perhaps allowing Tyler to “quit” also helped him to continue to want to play around on the keyboard—and enjoy playing music on his own time!

The following Sunday there was mention of a talent show at our church in March. I asked Ty if he would be interested in participating—we could perform our song! Being honest with myself, I didn’t feel confident in my playing the piano and singing at the same time—nor did he. Then it dawned on me... James! I met him at my eye doctor three week prior. He mentioned that he was a song writer, piano player, and producer. We shared a powerful synergy that day, but we didn’t know exactly what would come of it. Ah ha... I got it!

Waiting for the universe to chart the course with my intentional thoughts and actions—by darn, he’s supposed to be producing “Shine!” Today we enjoyed one another’s company over lunch. Not only did I know he was the man that is supposed to be arranging “Shine!”—in other words, adding more than simply the right hand—but also we possessed a lot of gifts that could help one another lift even more people up! You’ll have to wait for that story to unfold. Currently he is busy writing a score for a movie and a jingle project for a large convenient store chain. Shhhhhh... Can’t let the cat out of the bag just yet!

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE MUSICAL

On our way to church, my son Tyler began to tell me he was given a part in a school musical titled The Little Red Hen. I quickly asked him if it was similar to the book of the same title. To my delight, it was! The wheels immediately started to turn. As we sat in our pew, I reflected on my blessings for the week. One of my thoughts of gratitude was meeting someone new who was filled with as much joy and abundance as I was. Jason had a sparkle in his eye and a hip-hop in his step. When he began to speak, I knew something magical was about to happen! We started to talk about our passions and how we enjoy spending our time. In addition to him managing an eyewear store, he also wrote love songs and played in a band.

As I waited for my glasses, he told me about some research he has done with sound frequencies and their correlation to people’s moods. I immediately told him about how he can turn his findings into a business. He said that he lets “the guy upstairs” guide his life. I asked him what exactly that meant. He said I’m too busy right now, but if I wanted his research, I could have it to do with what I want. Not only was he incredibly gifted, he was amazingly giving. After church it dawned on me! He is supposed to compose the song for our soon to be musical.

We got home from church and I immediately began to transform the story I made into a puppet show a few years ago titled, A Tale of Miss Molly Sunshine, into a musical! At the same time, my husband and Tyler began to work on their pinewood derby car for Boy Scouts on the kitchen table. As they worked, I asked Ty questions that gave me a better understanding of how The Little Red Hen Musical flowed. All of his feedback worked beautifully into the creation of our musical—two acts, three song repeats, an appropriate sized cast, and fabulous lessons to live by.

When it came time to create the theme song, we took all eight lessons and Ty shouted out “London Bridge is Falling Down!” By darn, I think he’s got it. With a little rework of the original script, it flowed beautifully. He ran to his toy box, grabbed his keyboard, and knew which buttons to push to play other possible tunes. None of them were fitting the lyrics as perfectly as his initial suggestion.

One hour later, Adventure to Sunnyside—The Musical was born… Shine on!

When I graduated from Gettysburg College in 1996, I accepted a position with Chatham College in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. One of the benefits to my position was that I got to see parts of Pennsylvania I may not have experienced otherwise. Grove City was sixty miles north of Pittsburgh and one of these “special” places. After I finished my high school visits for the day, I stopped into a factory/store called Wendell August. They specialized in hand-made ornaments, platters, and coasters all from beautiful pewter. I remember watching a man behind a glass window work so diligently and passionately with his hands. Our tour guide explained the labor of love and the craftsmanship behind each beautiful piece. I remember feeling their company and country pride. I left Wendell August that day with a re-newed appreciation of the manufacturing trade.

As long as I can remember, I was fascinated with how things were manufactured and especially watching people create things from raw materials. My father owned a baby shoe manufacturing company in Littlestown, Pennsylvania. I probably gained much of my fascination and appreciation from working with and watching his employees take pride in what they created.

A few years ago, Wendell August opened another store in a beautifully, refurbished barn on Exton Main Street in Exton, Pennsylvania. Since their arrival, I may have only visited once, however a few days before Christmas, the Alumni Director of Gettysburg College posted on Face book that he went out looking for USA made gifts for the holidays and he could only find wine!

Disappointed with this reality, I set out to do the same thing the next day; however, I knew just where to go—Wendell August! As I went to the register to buy my three angel ornaments, I was greeted by a delightful woman named, Laurie. She asked me if I would like to be placed on their e-mail list. After I gave her my last name, she quickly said, “You’re Molly Sunshine! I saw you speak at an Exton Chamber event.” There was instant synergy between us. I gave her my card and encouraged her to sign up for my monthly inspiration.

When I got home, I felt a need to call the store. Following my intuition, I shared with her my Wendell August story and asked her if she would like to discuss how we can partner and inspire others to create their best life. She was excited, but also very busy around the holidays! This was something she had always wanted to do, but never was able to execute because of other priorities. She promised we would connect early in the New Year.

Today we met and there was not only synergy, but also a sense of shared passion for the possibilities. I brought with me a section of my 2012 vision board and how Wendell August could fit into the vision. I pitched “Wendell Women and Wine” events! She loved the idea and asked if she could copy the vision board section I had brought with me.

To my delight, there will also be a Wendell August Molly Sunshine Exclusive item for each attendee at every event. I will also deliver a 20 minute inspirational keynote, with lots of networking and WINE! I will also be there to personally autograph books. Tickets will be limited so be sure to SIGN UP to be the first to hear the exciting details.

The first Wendell Women event will be in February to launch their “LOVE” jewelry line… and it is FABULOUS! Stay tuned for details...

Sunshine Strategy: Be Grateful.

On average, 70% of each American’s day is filled with negative impressions—whether it’s other people’s words and actions, challenging situations, or media influence (television, internet, magazines). Sometimes we are a part of that 70%. I want you to think before you speak when you go to complain about the following things—add to the list with your most common complaints!

In time, it will become natural to throw positive words towards negative thoughts, actions, and situations. Be grateful! We’ve all won the lottery of life, it’s up to us how we are going to spend it. Spend it wisely and be grateful for the opportunity to live life to the fullest! Shine on!

1.) Complaint: I have so much laundry to wash! Gratitude Attitude: I have clothes to wear and the means to clean them.

2.) Complaint: My clothes are too tight! Gratitude Attitude: I am thankful I have food to eat.

3.) Complaint: I hate having to clean the gutters and windows. Gratitude Attitude: I have a home.

4.) Complaint: Ugh! This parking spot is so far away. Gratitude Attitude: I can walk and have a car that got me here.

5.) Complaint: When is this government going to do something right? Gratitude Attitude: I’m grateful for my freedom of speech.

6.) Complaint: It’s not time to wake up! Gratitude Attitude: I am grateful that the alarm clock went off—that means I’m alive!

7.) Complaint: I can’t believe we have to sit in the back of the church. Gratitude Attitude: I am grateful that my hearing is good and that we have the freedom to worship whatever, wherever.

8.) Complaint: My body aches. Gratitude Attitude: I have the ability to work hard and exercise my body.

Sunshine Strategy: Define Your Peace.

I was enjoying coffee with an acquaintance yesterday. She was sharing with me all the exciting things she had been able to create with her life. In the middle of our conversation, she shifted into “if only” mode. “If only I did this… if only I did that, then I would be in a higher position in my career.”

I then shared with her a statistic that only 15% of women over 40 actually desire to take their career to the next level; the majority of the other women choose not to because of added pressure, politics, and responsibility. These women surveyed wanted to see the fruits of their labor, make a difference in the community, and spend time with family and friends. She responded, “That’s me!”

I told her that if she is truly in the 85%, she has no reason to “what-if” her life any longer. At that moment, she discovered that the “what-if” didn’t fit her definition of peace. It was like I took a 300 pound boulder off her back. Why was she carrying this boulder? …because she didn’t define her sense of peace! She was defining it by what she thought she should be doing based on what she was told and by what others had done.

There comes a time to find peace with where you are and where you are going based on the foundation of where you want to go and your capacity to do it! Start today by defining YOUR peace. What does it look and feel like? Keep this front of mind and you will continue down the path to your place of peace and happiness. Shine on!

Sunshine Strategy: Love Often. Although you may not like your children’s decisions all the time, you will always love them. It is hard to forget things that may have caused us pain, but if we throw love instead of hurtful words and actions towards it, you’ll be better prepared mentally and spiritually to handle events that happen in the future.

Sunshine Strategy: Creed Four—Fear not! I have the wisdom and perspective to carry on.

There is a difference between flying by the seat of your pants and taking calculated risks. Flying by the seat of your pants often means you didn’t develop a plan or acquire any new knowledge. Taking calculated risks means that you have researched the best plan and gained valuable knowledge and perspective on how to increase your chances of success. You also have a middle ground where you feel you gained enough knowledge and perspective for you to fly by the seat of your pants the rest of the way.

Many people use the same “Fear Not” method for every situation. I challenge you to set up your own parameters as to when you use which approach. Not every situation requires you to calculate all the possibilities. This can cause a company to go under because they do not move fast enough. Conversely, flying by the seat of your pants on every initiative can also be disastrous. Decide which Fear Not approach is required for the situation and the reason why. This is also a good strategy when working in teams. Group decision will help buy-in and engagement in the project. Also, if one part of the project fails, it helps the group easily adapt or stay the course. Thoughts are equally as powerful as actions. Fear not and shine on!

If each of us not only do our part in modeling the behaviors we would like to see in others, it will be the catalyst to helping others take steps in that same direction. At first, it is not easy being a change agent, but eventually it becomes second nature to “make a difference, by being the difference.” Start with your children, your co-workers, and your family—build your confidence in your ability to persuade others to entertain a different perspective.

By opening minds, we are opening hearts, eyes and hands. For the sake of our future generations and the millions of years to come, join me in helping love Mother Earth and shift things towards a new beginning, filled with compassion and opportunity. Shine on!

Sunshine Strategy: Celebrate Family Strengths.

In our DNA we have dominant and recessive genes. Not unlike DNA, we have dominant and recessive traits that are either passed down from generation to generation or repressed. Lucky for us, we have control over a majority of our character traits and behaviors! There was a time that I wasn’t as positive as I am today. It was hard work to not only “re-program,” but to hardwire it into my everyday living.

Take a look back into your past three to four generations of family. Look at the people in your family and what they left as their legacy that helped the next generation to live a little bit better than the one before. In this time of thanksgiving, let’s not only continue to give thanks to those who came before us, but also see how we can carry on the tradition of building stronger generations to withstand the uncertainty of the times. Sunshine Strategy: Be a Friend.

What does it mean to be a friend? You may think that the answer is simple; however, when you ask ten different people, you will discover the answers vary. The quest to find the right answer should never be the goal, but to find those with similar definitions so that you can both feel comfortable living in abundance, sharing your knowledge and perspective, and supporting one another when things don’t go exactly as planned. There are also different levels of friendship—and no, it should never be measured by the numbers of friends you have on Facebook! Think about what happened to your friendships over the years—friends change as you grow and adventure out into the world; however, there may be one or two that have been through it all with you. Why is that?

In this time of Thanksgiving, take a hard look at your friends and ask yourself, “Why do I choose to remain friends with (name)?” Share that moment of gratitude with them! If you are having trouble coming up with a good reason as to why you are friends, it’s time to distance yourself from them. Having trouble doing this? Go to events or join associations where you increase your chances of finding new friends. The Law of Attraction will not work in your favor if you choose to sit at home and do nothing about it. Get out there and be a friend so you can attract your friends!

Sunshine Strategy: Be Persistent.

Have you ever driven somewhere for the first time and had a feeling that you might have gone the wrong way, but weren’t quite sure, so you stopped and asked for directions or turned back? You then discover that the final turn to your destination was only a few streets ahead. Being persistent is like driving your car to a place you’ve never been, often we give up before we get there or we begin to doubt our plan. There is also a fine line between being persistent and pushing too hard.

There is something right now in my professional life that I want so passionately. It will not only take my career to the next level, but also give me the opportunity to significantly impact over 100,000 lives. On the other hand, I know if I push too hard, the parties involved in the decision making could easily walk away. In addition, the final part of my “definite chief aim” is to impact 100,000 lives. It is the only remaining part of my five year plan to come true. As you can imagine, I have an overwhelming urge to get it done by December 31, 2011, but being persistent without being seen as pushy is going to be the key to my success and the success of the other parties involved.

As a result of today’s sunshine strategy, I challenge you to look into your past and look for how being persistent paid off for you and perhaps how it failed, and what you would do differently next time. Moving forward, I challenge you to look at where you need to be more persistent in order for you to create your best life. Where is it that you want to go next, how are you going to get there, and what level of persistency is required to get you there? Shine on!

Sunshine Strategy: Seek to understand. All my life I questioned things. How does it work? How can it work better? Why do we do it that way? Is there a better way? Unfortunately there are still leaders that see people who have the ability to question, understand, and find solutions, as people who are nuisances or don’t have enough to do. Leading people with these gifts can be challenging at times; however, you can always look to gain fresh ideas, a team that is open to trying new things, and engaged employees.

I consider myself to be a questioning person and a leader who embraces those who question why we do what we do. When I received my Lean Six Sigma Certificate, it helped me put a framework around my questioning and process improvement techniques. Smart organizations now realize that process and performance improvement should be a part of everyone’s day. Explore how you can improve your business operations and internal communications; document intellectual memory and build client relations. Building a culture of sunshine takes time, but don’t forget to look for the rainbow after every storm. It will give you the power you need to shine on!

Sunshine Strategy: Be Flexible. “Sometimes changing your direction opens up new opportunities.” I see it all the time. People have an idea when it is time to shift direction of their company, leave a relationship, or change their job, but many choose to stay in the situation and allow their worst nightmares to come true-- bankruptcy, emotional abuse, or a hostile work environment. It is difficult to be flexible and change direction when you have spent a lot of time and effort doing "something."
