You Determine Your Legacy

After one of our Rhino Living keynotes to hundreds of students and alumni at Villanova University, Dave and I were asked to have dinner with a few of their top students and faculty.  We met a fascinating man by the name of Ed Dougherty.  He is a visiting assistant engineering professor at Villanova and teaches a "Technology and Innovation" undergraduate course.  In addition, he is the "mad scientist" behind the Wavecam, "an aerial camera system built to pan, tilt and zoom, all while flying vertically across football fields, basketball courts and hockey rinks."

Unlike the Skycam system, Wavecam is a permanent installation.  In fall 2009 it was not only found at Villanova, but also the University of Alabama and California University of Pennsylvania and is currently marketing the technology to NFL franchises and pro and college hockey and basketball teams, even the horse-racing industry. Concert promoters, political candidates' speech sites and even mega-churches are exploring Wavecam.

Ed is the real deal! He not only impressed me with his humility, but also his sincere interest to make a difference. You know where I am going to go with this one!  Yep, living his legacy to the nth degree! As a kid, he knew early on that being a lawyer or banker wasn't in the cards.  He was challenged with dyslexia, but discovered he was extremely good at math and visualizing things.  Growing up, his family was the only one with a television, but his dad didn't have a clue how to opperate it.  When the picture went "fuzzy," he was the one who reached into its "gutts" and fixed it!

He also wanted to do something that someone had never done before!  In addition to Wavecam, Ed designed a tracking device implanted into gray whales that monitored the migratory routes from the Baja California peninsula to the Bering Strait! Not to mention his work on smoke detectors, dartboards and cardiac monitor that identifies an irregular heartbeat before it occurs.  He even worked on developing a robotic nose to detect bombs and drugs.

This man is amazing and living his dreams while making a difference! Want to read more about his story?  He was recently featured in Main Line Today--"The Wave of the Future." READ MORE>>

YOUR LEGACY CHALLENGE!

1.) Did you ever have an idea or think about an invention only to find that a few years later it was invented by someone else?  Leaders seek out people to help them live out their dreams and make a difference.  Instead of complaining or saying, "hey, that was my idea"... actually do something about it!  Reach out the the inventor and congratulate him or her.  You actually might learn something!

2.) Don't be a part of the problem.  Be a part of the solution. What have you done to inspire or cultivate the creativity in others?  What have you done to squash it? What can you do to keep people dreaming and exploring their gifts and passions?
